A recent article in Men’s Journal discussed the future of automotive electronics. The article had a brief description of each technology but a partial list is as follows: On board GPS technology that anticipate road conditions and automat- ically raise the suspension for approaching curbs, downshifting for hills, etc… Vehicle to vehicle communications to avoid crashes such as in times of low visibility. High beam headlights that are always on with auto dimming when approaching cars or pedestrians. Headlights which project navigation animations in front of the car. LED lighting that illuminates the entire vehicle Roads with embedded charging pads for wireless charging for electric vehicles Customized seats and steering wheels that use 3D printing technology that could easily be changed for each driver. Self-parking cars that allows for condensed group parking in autono- mous parking garages where door access would not be necessary. As foreign as some of this sounds, this may become standard on cars of the next generation just as we have come to expect air bags, TPMS, on board navigation and other safety and convenience features. If you like to perform minor maintenance on your Porsche as I do, one has to wonder how much longer we’ll be able to do any of our own work. If you’ve not yet made plans to attend the European Auto Show on June 5, you need to add it to your calendar. No other time or location in the St. Louis area can you see Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, and of course Porsches, plus all the other European cars in one place. Be sure to stop by the Club tent and say “hi”, especially if you are a new member. Also this month is a scenic road tour to Clarksville, a Father’s Day Car Show in Defiance, and the annual road tour to Fast Eddies. If this isn’t enough to satisfy your Porsche pallet, please let me know so we can improve our offerings. We’re here to serve our members.
