After our planning meeting in December, where the board set the region’s tentative calendar of events, the Region is off to a fast start in 2018.
In January, club members participated in several social and non-driving events including Tischzeit Thursday at Katie’s Pizza & Pasta Osteria, our board meeting at Fitz’s Root Beer, a Region display at the St. Louis Auto Show and the Columbia group’s planning meeting. Check the articles in the February 2018 Die Porsche Plauderei to see what you missed.
The Car Show Committee has begun work on All-Porsche Car Show, to be held in August. The newly formed IndyCar Race Committee is planning our club participation in the August IndyCar Race at Gateway while the 60th Anniversary Celebration Committee, also recently organized, is starting work on an event to celebrate this momentous anniversary. In addition, our Webmaster and Social Media Chairman, Ted Zimmerman, has been hard at work updating the club website, calendar and social media presence.
Up next, Porsche Parade registration starts Monday 1/29 at 11:00 am.
February will be even busier with Tischzeit Thursday at Lesters, Intro to High Performance Driver’s Education at Porsche St. Louis, Valentine’s Wine & Brunch at Chandler Hill Vineyards, Maintenance Tech at Clear Auto Bra and the Columbia group’s Dinner at Babbo’s Spaghetteria. March will roar in with Tischzeit Thursday and a Tech Session at Porsche St. Louis within the first three days of the month.
Our calendar for the remainder of 2018 is filled with events of all types, on average 1.4 per week. Hopefully you can find something that interests you soon. If nothing else, come out and meet some fun people with at least one shared interest – Porsche! Guests, whether club members or not, are welcome at most of our activities.
One of our most popular social events is the monthly Tischzeit Thursday (TT). But what is “Tischzeit”? According to the Langenscheidt German to English Dictionary, Tischzeit is lunchtime, or more generally, mealtime.
Our Tischzeit Thursdays started as Thirsty Thursday; a gathering of club members and guests at local bars to imbibe and talk Porsche. Over time, we began visiting more restaurants, more significant others began to attend and the evening became about food, fun and Porsche. Several years ago, with this change in focus, members wanted a more descriptive name. When Earlwayne suggested Tischzeit, and explained its meaning, we adopted the new name right away. Now our four Social Chairs take turns finding interesting restaurants throughout the area for our monthly (except December) TTs. TT is bound to be held somewhere near you in the near future. Take the time to come out and enjoy some great company, and hopefully, some great food!
As I mentioned in last month’s President’s Message, the first time I participated in a High Performance Driver’s Education weekend, I was more than somewhat “nervous”. Evidently, this trepidation is not unusual for first-time HPDE participants. In an effort to ease that nervousness, Catherine Ham, our Treasurer, and a relative newbie to track events, has put together a program to introduce other rookies to the Porsche Club HPDE program. On February 10th, she will host a panel of novice and expert drivers who will discuss equipment needs, car preparation, and what to expect from a weekend at the track. This non-driving session will be held at Porsche St. Louis and will permit you to take part in a special “Taste of the Track” session at Gateway in August. See the article in this issue for more information and how to register.
Our annual Valentine’s event will be a member’s only Wine & Brunch gathering at Chandler Hill Vineyards and the Maintenance Tech Session at Clear Auto Bar will focus on changing your own oil. The Columbia group will gather at Babbo’s Spaghetteria in Columbia for Dinner.
